30 The Unthinkable

I slipped back inside the room behind her. An older couple smiled at us sweetly, probably remembering a time when they were young and had slipped off together. Boy, did they have the wrong end of the stick!

I quickly scanned the room for the weird guy. He was still by the desk of the nauseous scientist, who hadn’t returned yet. He was sort of, leaning against the desk with his hands behind his back. I looked at his face; he seemed to be far away. Then I noticed the scientist’s keyboard moving slowly towards him. He must have been dragging it! I continued to watch him as he turned slightly. I could only assume that he was typing something on the keyboard. What was he up to?

Unable to see the screen from where I was, I decided to wander around a bit, to try to get a better view. Charlie followed me with her eyes, though not with her feet. The moment had passed: Our boyfriend/girlfriend “act” was definitely OFF for now. She scowled at me. I just couldn’t figure her out. She was just pretending to be my girlfriend, yet when I said I thought another girl was pretty, she got angry! Girls! How’s a boy supposed to know what’s going on?

I could just about see the screen, from my position behind a potted plant. The weird man’s right hand tapped away furiously at the keyboard. I strained my eyes, trying desperately to make out what he was typing. I couldn’t! I also couldn’t possibly get any closer without him noticing me. What could I do? Then, like a coin in a slot, the penny dropped! I pulled my phone out of my pocket. It had a 10x optical zoom. I might not be able to read a screen from here but it could. I looked over at Charlie, hoping to share this eureka moment but she had her back to me. She seemed to be listening intently to the guide. Oh well, never mind. I zoomed and clicked. I carried on taking several photos. Then suddenly the weird man hit the return key, and walked away from the desk. I took one final photo!
